Parasha: Va Era – and I appeared
Torah: Shemot 6:2 – 9:35
** Many Israelites did not want to leave Mitzryim. Most of them had been there all of their lives and were pretty comfortable with their lifestyles. Avinu had to “prepare” them to leave even as He was “preparing” Paro to expel them from the land. Paro began the process before Moshe was born. Moshe was eighty years old when he returned to lead Israel out of Mitzryim. After Moshe arrived, Paro increased the work quotas for Israel and had them beaten when they couldn’t meet their daily quotas. The work load got more difficult and the beatings happened more often. Israel was being prepared to leave.
“And Moses spoke so to the children of Israel: but they listened not to Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.” (Ex 6:9)
“A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.” (Pr 17:22)
“The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?” (Pr 18:14)
** The timing had to be right so that the people were ready to leave when Paro was compelled to send them away.
