Weekly Torah Lesson
Parasha: Yitro – Jethro
Torah: Shemot 18:1 – 20:26
19:1 In Rosh Chodesh Sivan, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Mitzryim, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.
*** “And he said, Certainly I will be with you; and this shall be a token (sign) to you, that I have sent you: When you have brought forth the people out of Mitzryim, you shall serve Avinu on this mountain.” (Ex 3:12 )
3 And Moshe went up to Elohim, and Avinu called to him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shall you say to the Beit Ya’akov, and tell the children of Israel; 4 You have seen what I did to the Mitzryimians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself.
5 Now therefore, if you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then you shall be a peculiar treasure to me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.
*** “You also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to Avinu through Yeshua HaMeshiach.” (1Pe 2:5 )
*** “10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of Avinu: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. 11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;” (1Pe 2:10-11 )
*** “And has made us kings and priests to Yeshua and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” (Re 1:6 )
*** “And have made us to Avinu kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.” (Re 5:10 )
*** “Blessed and holy is he that has part in the first resurrection: on such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of Avinu and of Meshiach, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” (Re 20:6 )
7 And Moshe came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which Avinu commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that Avinu has spoken we will do. And Moshe returned the words of the people to Avinu. 9 And Avinu said to Moshe, See, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you for ever. And Moshe told the words of the people to Avinu.
*** “Meshiach answered and said to them, You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of Avinu.” (Mt 22:29 )
*** “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Lu 24:27 )
*** “And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Lu 24:32 )
*** “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,” (Lu 24:45 )
*** “When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this to them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Meshiach had said.” (Joh 2:22 )
*** “Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” (John 5:39 )
*** “Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuses you, even Moshe, in whom you trust.46 For had you believed Moshe, you would have believed me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you believe not his writings, how shall you believe my words?” (John 5:45-47 )
*** “If he called them elohim, to whom the word of Avinu came, and the scripture cannot be broken;” (John 10:35 )
*** “For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.” (John 20:9 )
*** “For whatever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” (Ro 15:4 )
*** “15 And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise to salvation through faith in Meshiach Yeshua. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of Avinu, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” (2Ti 3:15-16 )
** The Apostolic Writings were written approximately thirteen hundred years after the Torah was given to Moshe. We find that most of the children of Israel weren’t able to understand the Scriptures because they were “veiled” to keep them from that level of understanding that revealed Yeshua as Meshiach.
*** “13 And not as Moshe, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not steadfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: 14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remains the same veil not taken away in the reading of the Scriptures ; which veil is done away in Meshiach. 15 But even to this day, when Moshe is read, the veil is on their heart. 16 Nevertheless when Avinu wants the Scriptures to be understood, the veil shall be taken away.” (2Co 3:13-16)
** From this example Shaul wrote, “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:” (2Co 4:3)
This might explain why Yeshua teaches, “No man can come to me, except the Father which has sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (Joh 6:44)
** We all like to think that we have been “enlightened” by the Scriptures, especially the Apostolic Writings. However, it appears that the “veil” is on the “gospels” and apostolic writings” as well.
