Weekly Torah Lesson
Parasha: Va Yalech – and he went
Torah: Devarim 31:1-30
9 And Moshe wrote this law, and delivered it to the priests the sons of Levi, which bore the ark of the covenant of Avinu, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 And Moshe commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of Sukkot, 11 When all Israel is come to appear before Avinu Elohekah in the place which he shall choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and your stranger that is within your gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear Avinu Elohekah, and observe to do all the words of this law: 13 And that their children, which have not known anything, may hear, and learn to fear Avinu Elohekah, as long as you live in the land where you go over Jordan to possess it.
** Last week we learned that the “New Covenant” was also presented to “…those who are not here today..”. Today we learn that this “New Covenant” is to be “restored and introduced” every seven years. In Jeremiah we learn that this New Covenant is to be presented to a people whose “hearts” have been “opened” to receive and retain the “words of the covenant”.
*** “31 Behold, the days come, said Avinu, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was an husband to them, said Avinu: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, said Avinu, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their Elohim, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Avinu: for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, said Avinu: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” (Jer 31:31-34)
** Ultimately, a “new people” will receive the words of this covenant”. They will have “hearts” that completely understand the words of the covenant and everyone will “know” the Source” of the covenant. This understanding is why Yeshua said:
*** “17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth pass, one stroke or one pronunciation mark shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” (Mt 5:17-18)
