Why Food?

October 22, 2018 By R Memmi Leave a Comment

“Avraham stood over them under the tree and they ate.” (Genesis 18:8) What more spiritual activity could there be than eating, when it is done not only with the mouth, but with the mind? When a human being eats what is defined as ‘proper’ and his mind and soul are engaged, he separates the good from the bad, the divine from the mundane. The food rises to a higher realm For, in mindful eating, the human soul reaches beyond the entire order of being. Avinu created plants and animals to produce energy for man.  When man consumes that energy and uses it to ‘worship Avinu, he reverses the normal path of energy, returning it to it’s true source.

Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Re 5:8 )

3  Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 4  And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before Avinu from the angel’s hand. (Re 8:3-4 )

1  Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2  speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3  forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which Avinu created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4  For every creature of Avinu is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5  for it is sanctified by the word of Avinu and prayer. 1 Ti 4:1-5 )

1  Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, 2  “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These are the animals which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth: (Le 11:1-2 )

As the Creator formed from the spiritual the physical, so the human being transforms the physical into spiritual by consuming food and using the energy to worship Avinu. There are those who believe that we can eat anything that we want to because Yeshua taught us that we could.

When Shaul wrote to Timothy, Yeshua had been resurrected for at least twenty years and he clarified what he meant by food when he wrote, “..for it (human food) is sanctified (set apart for human consumption) by the Word of Avinu and prayer.”

Food is indeed ‘sanctified’ in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.  Every time we put something in our mouths, we either worship or we defile.
