Weekly Torah Lesson 2
Parasha: K’doshim – Holy Ones
Torah: v’Yikra 19:1 – 20:27
You shall fear every man his mother, and his father,..(V’Yikra 19:3)
Some have a problem using the word “fear” in the Scriptures. They like to “put a little sugar” on the Holy Script by substituting, honor or revere. The Hebrew word “Yirah) only means “fear”.
I have noticed in my neighborhood that there are several widows who are under the care of their children. I think that it is a great privilege to be able to care for a parent.
In verse 3, it is linked to “Be Holy, for I am Holy..”
Shaul teaches:
““Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:” (Eph 6:2)
So, now we have a commandment that actually has a physical promise attached to it. Here is how it reads:
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which Avinu, Elohekah is giving you.” (Ex 20:12)
Long life is the “reward” for honoring (in fear) our parents.
